The Gloup, Mull Head and the Brough of Deerness

Mull Head and The Gloup in Orkney offer a stunning hiking experience that immerses you in the raw beauty of Scotland’s northern coast. As you set out on the Mull Head trail, the path takes you along dramatic cliff edges, where the North Sea’s waves crash against the rugged shoreline far below. The journey is a blend of breathtaking seascapes and rolling moorland, with the scent of salt air and the calls of seabirds accompanying you along the way.

One of the trail's highlights is The Gloup, a partially collapsed sea cave that forms a striking chasm in the landscape. This natural wonder showcases the relentless power of the ocean, a reminder of the forces that have shaped this remote and wild region over centuries.

Continuing the trail along the coast we will find the Brough of Deerness, its a dramatic sea stack with the ruins of an early medieval Norse settlement including a small stone chapel accessible via a steep costal path, the site offers stunning views and a glimpse into Orkney's Viking past.

Whether you're captivated by the ancient history that permeates the Orkney Islands or simply seeking solitude in nature, hiking around Mull Head and The Gloup is an experience that connects you deeply with the timeless beauty of Scotland's northernmost shores.
