West Coast - Stromness to Birsay

Welcome to the West Orkney Coast Hike, a stunning 17-mile trek that takes you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes and historical sites in the Orkney Islands. This journey, starting in Stromness and ending at the Broch of Birsay, is not just a hike; it's a walk through time, showcasing the natural beauty and rich heritage of the Orkney mainland.
Starting Point: Stromness
Your adventure begins in Stromness, a charming port town known for its narrow, winding streets and historical significance. As one of Orkney’s oldest towns, Stromness has a vibrant maritime history, and it's the perfect place to start your trek. You'll find plenty of local shops, cafes, and the Stromness Museum, where you can learn more about the town’s past before setting off.
First Stop: Yesnaby (Approx. 5 Miles)
From Stromness, you'll head west along the coast towards Yesnaby, one of Orkney's most dramatic and wild landscapes. This part of the hike takes you along rugged cliffs, where you'll witness the power of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocky shoreline. Keep an eye out for Yesnaby Castle, a sea stack that has become one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Orkney. The cliffs here are also home to rare wildflowers, such as the Scottish primrose, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts.
Second Stop: Skara Brae (Approx. 6 Miles)
Continuing northward, your next major stop is Skara Brae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Neolithic settlements in Europe. This 5,000-year-old village offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life. As you explore the ancient stone houses, you'll marvel at the ingenuity of their builders and gain insight into how people lived thousands of years ago. The visitor center at Skara Brae provides detailed exhibits that complement the experience.
Final Stop: Broch of Birsay (Approx. 6 Miles)
The final leg of your journey leads you to the Broch of Birsay, located on a tidal island just off the northwest coast of Mainland Orkney. The island is accessible by a causeway at low tide, so timing your arrival is crucial. The Broch itself is an impressive Iron Age structure, but the island also has remnants from the Pictish and Norse periods. The panoramic views from Birsay are a perfect reward at the end of your hike, offering vistas of the surrounding coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.
